From October 2015, The Arts Society Oxford is a two session Society. This means our lecture programme is repeated by running it once in the morning and then again in the afternoon.

Lectures are generally held on the second Wednesday of each month from September to June at Magdalen College.  We have an exciting programme.  The morning session starts at 11 am and the afternoon session starts at 2 pm.  We have coffee and tea available before each session.

When you join the Society, you join either as a morning member or as an afternoon member.  Members must attend the session to which they belong.  Because of the limited number of seats in the hall, we cannot accommodate members who wish to switch for individual lectures, except in exceptional circumstances when arrangements have been made in advance with the Membership Secretary.

Our membership subscription is £45 for the Society year that runs from September to June.  The membership fee is reduced if you join part way through the year as detailed below.

If you use internet or telephone banking, your subscription can be paid by direct bank transfer.  This helps the Society as it saves bank charges.  If you cannot pay by direct bank transfer, you can pay your subscription by cheque.

The Arts Society Oxford members automatically become members of the national organisation and receive the quarterly magazine where national and regional study days and trips are advertised, along with feature articles on arts-related topics. The Arts Society Oxford is in the process of becoming a registered charity and it will, in due course, help the Society if you pay under Gift Aid. You can do this if you are a UK taxpayer.  Once we are registered we will ask you to complete the Society’s Gift Aid form.

In addition to the lecture programme, members are welcome to attend our social events, visits, and Wyvern study days. Extra charges apply for these additional events.

Our aim is to run an active, stimulating and sociable fine arts Society.

At present, our membership is full, but we do operate a waiting list (please see below).

If you apply for membership after the October lecture the membership fee is reduced to £41.
If you apply after the November lecture the fee is £37.
If you apply after the December lecture the fee is £33.
If you apply after the January lecture the fee is £29.
If you apply after the February lecture the fee is £25.
If you apply after the March lecture the fee is £21.
If you apply after the April lecture the fee is £14.

Waiting List

The Arts Society Oxford has currently reached capacity with a thriving membership of 500. We do maintain an afternoon waiting list which is quite short. We also maintain a morning membership waiting list for non-members who cannot attend in the afternoon and for afternoon members who want to transfer to morning membership.  This is a lengthy waiting list.  A new person joining this waiting list now should expect to wait around three years for morning membership.

Being on the waiting list allows you to:

  • receive information by email about lectures and some of our other activities;
  • attend ONE lecture a year subject to availability and at the guest fee of £7 per lecture; as places are limited, it is essential to book a place by contacting Diana Gordon in advance, contact details are shown below;
  • subject to availability, join our social events, study visits, and Wyvern study days, for which extra charges are made;
  • join The Arts Society as an affiliate member
