As Oxford is so rich in wonderful buildings and museums, we are holding some sessions to explore them. The idea is to Get to Know…. a small number of paintings or objects in a particular gallery of a museum or a specific aspect of a building, for example, the Old Schools Quadrangle or stained glass in a college. The session is led by one of our members who does not pretend to be an expert but has researched the subject and is willing to share the knowledge he or she has gained. Each session will last about 45 minutes plus time for coffee.
Another very important aspect is to Get to Know … each other. To this end, coffee beforehand will be obligatory! The sessions are timed so that participants can explore the gallery or building further and then perhaps have some lunch together.
The first session took place in late January 2014. As so many members wanted to attend, a second session was run. Alison Porter led a tour looking at four statues in the Ashmolean which demonstrate developments in Greek Sculpture in the 6th and 5th centuries BC. The participants enjoyed chatting to each other over coffee and felt it was a good way to meet people.
These sessions are organised on an ad hoc basis and as each one is arranged, we will send members an email. There will normally be no charge, except for coffee, but members will be asked to book their places.
